Stockholm +50 is a crucial international environmental meeting that will be held in Stockholm on 2nd and 3rd June 2022 in Sweden. Anchored in the Decade of Action, under the theme “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity,” this high-level meeting will follow months of consultations and discussions with individuals, communities, organizations and governments around the world. A one-day preparatory meeting was held at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 28 March 2022.

Stockholm+50 will commemorate the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment and celebrate 50 years of global environmental action. By recognizing the importance of multilateralism in tackling the Earth’s triple planetary crisis – climate, nature, and pollution – the event aims to act as a springboard accelerate the implementation of the UN Decade of Action to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals, including the 2030 Agenda, Paris Agreement on climate change, the post-2020 global Biodiversity Framework, and encourage the adoption of green post-COVID-19 recovery plans.

As part of UNIYIA’s objective to be involved in meetings like this to get the voices of African youth in global climate discussions, our co-founder and Executive Director, Abdul-Rashid Tahiru participated at this event at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Chaired by the Stockholm+50 co-hosts, Sweden and Kenya, the meeting was structured around three interactive discussions on the preparations for the three Stockholm+50 Leadership Dialogues and other elements of the international meeting on 2-3 June 2022.

Following a brief presentation on the respective Leadership Dialogue themes, the floor was opened for comments and/or questions on the draft background papers.

The preparatory meeting was held in-person (with COVID-related restrictions applicable at the time of the meeting) with live streaming on UN Web TV in the six official languages of the United Nations.
